Eventually, start over

Don’t get too attached to the first draft of the beginning of a story. I try not to. Here are some reasons why you may want to revise it. (And, just so you know, Wendig isn’t one for euphemisms.)

The case of the closed case

Fans of the great detective will be pleased to learn the U.S. Supreme Court, by declining to hear a case, has made Sherlock Holmes fair game for new interpretation. I love the original stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, but I also love some of the newer tales. Laurie King’s stories of Mary Russell are among my favorite.
